About Dr.Jytte
Jytte Lokvig grew up in Copenhagen, Denmark. After coming to this country as a young adult, she attended the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles and later earned her degrees at Antioch College West, UCLA, California State University at Los Angeles, and California Pacific University. She has had careers as a professional, exhibiting artist and designer. She was owner of a successful boutique in Hollywood and a stuffed toy company, both of which featured her original designs. She was one of the founding staff members of the Area H Alternative School an experimental program sponsored Los Angeles City Schools, which became the model and forerunner of the current magnet and charter schools.
For the last twenty years Dr. Jytte has lived in the house she built on a mountainous site outside of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her involvement with the Alzheimer's community came about by chance, when an acquaintance asked her to visit with his mother while he was away on business for several months. By the time he returned, it had become clear to Lokvig that all her previous experiences had prepared so perfectly her for this and she had to explore this area to the fullest. After fifteen years she is still amazed at the spirit, humanity, and abilities of this population in spite of the limitations.
For the past dozen years Jytte Lokvig has worked with the elderly, especially those with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia. She coaches families and professional caregivers and designs life-enrichment programs and activities for Alzheimer’s facilities. Her workshops and seminars explore attitude and communication, promoting a healthy environment based on dignity and humor. Her overall goal is to foster a chance in how we view memory-impairment. Contrary to popular belief, Alzheimer’s does not have to be a catastrophe, but may in deed offer an extraordinary opportunity for families to create new bonds.
In her teaching, writing and modeling, Jytte Lokvig throws a lifeline to the caregiver. Her care giving models bring about dramatic changes in the mental state and behavior of the Alzheimer’s person. When the life of this individual improves, the lives of everyone else involved will also improve.
In 2002 Lokvig published her first book Alzheimer’s A to Z, Secrets to Successful Caregiving. It was very well received and acknowledged as being a uniquely effective guide to caregivers. It was featured on the cover of Publishers Weekly, March 3, 2003.
Dr. Jytte teamed up with John Becker, M.D. for a revised and updated version: Alzheimer's A to Z, A Quick Reference Guide. It is now available in Spanish, Portuguese and Japanese.
